The Montreal to Lake Ontario section of the St. Lawrence Seaway opened on March 23 with the transit of the M/V Beluga Emotion through the St. Lambert Lock. This followed the March 21 opening of the Welland Canal, which was the earliest opening in the Canal’s 75 year history. At a ceremony marking the Seaway opening in Montreal, Richard Corfe, Chairman and CEO of the St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation, said that the Seaway is pressing ahead with a number of new initiatives for 2006. The Gross Registered Tonnage charge for new cargo on the Montreal/Lake Ontario section has been eliminated. This is intended to build on the success of the flexible toll system introduced in 2005, which was designed to encourage smaller vessels to use the Welland Canal. The first all-container ship to transit the Seaway will do so in 2006. The Seaway has traditionally been used for bulk cargoes, but Mr. Corfe feels that smaller container ships, carrying 800-850 twenty-foot containers, can compete with the overly congested, land-based alternatives.
